  • 2010 GUIDE TO THE UNIVERSE
    Get ready for a fantastic year of astronomy with a preview of celestial events. We will examine the constellations, planets, meteor showers, returning comets, eclipses, and other special events. Weather permitting, we'll use the Strasenburgh Planetarium's rooftop observatory.

  • BIRD CARVING - Beginner and Intermediate
    Carve and paint a goldfinch. Bring to class a short-bladed carving knife, or purchase from instructor for $12. Other items you need will be discussed in class. Wood blank, eyes, leg materials, and paint will be provided for a $20 fee payable to the instructor. No previous experience necessary. Registrants must be at least age 18 or accompanied by an adult.

  • CHAIR SEAT RESEATING: CANE, RUSH, AND SPLINT
    Reseat your antique or modern chair with cane, splint, or fiber rush.  Don't remove the seat, as we may want to duplicate the pattern. Supplies available at the first class: $15 per chair seat.

  • Nanotechnology - Dream or Nightmare?
    Scientists and engineers of nanotechnology are learning how to guide individual atoms as they combine to form molecules and in turn, how to make materials - molecule by molecule - that don't exist in nature. Their work cuts across some of the hottest areas of science, including innovative drug-delivery systems, cancer treatments, ultra-strong lightweight materials, and mass-produced superconducting wires, to name a few. How much do we know about the effects of nano structures on human health and the environment?

  • Spanish for Beginners
    Want to learn how to say "I've got a toothache" in Spanish? Then join this fantastica class of Spanish for beginners. Acquiring vocabulary and common phrases will be our main effort. No previous experience necessary.

  • The Real Underground Railroad
    Thousands of "Freedom Seekers" left slavery and headed north. Many of their stories have been forgotten or turned into myths. We will discuss what is really known about this Underground Railroad, with special emphasis on New York and the Rochester area. Following the talk, take a docent-guided tour of the museum's interactive exhibit Flight to Freedom: Rochester's Underground Railroad to explore the dramatic local stories.

Learn how to engage children in science experiments that spark curiosity and encourage exploration through open-ended questioning and hands-on discovery. Museum educators will lead all programs. For adults with the option of bringing a child age 4–12.
